About Side Show Musical Theatre Workshop

 WHO WE ARE

Side Show Musical Theatre Workshop is an official Student Organization at Indiana State University specializing in the performance of musicals including revues, medleys, single musical numbers, full-length musicals, and official Broadway Musicals.

WHAT WE DO

The main focus of the group is to teach the process of Musical Theatre including Auditioning, Acting, Singing, Dancing, and Collaboration.  We perform musicals and shows to increase awareness in the arts and draw appreciation to performing.

HISTORY

Side Show was created by Neil Jordan Carpenter and Preston Dildine in the fall of 2010, as requested by the ISU Theatre Department Head, Sherry McFadden. They began as a group designed to instruct its members in the ways of performing and auditioning for musical theatre. It was also meant to be a positive and welcoming spokesgroup for the Department itself. The group made its debut in the fall of 2010 with Carpenter and Dildine acting as Co-Presidents.

The first performance was the 2010 Terre Haute Street Fair, which included numbers such as “When Words Fail” performed by Preston Dildine, “Proud of Your Boy” performed by Neil Jordan Carpenter, “A Whole New World” performed by Ian Marshall and “Loving You” performed by Angela Owens.

After Carpenter’s graduation in the spring of 2011, Dildine took over the group as President. Dildine started off the new season of fall 2011 by workshopping an original musical titled Loving Insanity with script written by Preston Dildine and music composed by Ian Marshall, the current Music Director. During the season, actors were selected for parts for the show. Concurrently the group had been asked by McFadden to perform at the Toyota of Terre Haute and Homecoming 2011. Because of the multiple shows occurring at once, Loving Insanity was not prioritized by most of the cast and therefore was a flop. The performance was sought of as a joke by many of the faculty of Indiana State University’s Theater Department and the students. Marshall and Dildine agreed in an interview that just a little more time in the schedule and better commitment from the cast would have made the show fantastic.

In the winter of 2011, Dildine resigned as President and placed Ian Marshall (the current Music Director) in charge. Marshall started to turn the group around as he secured a performance slot at the Indianapolis Artsgarden’s Winter Festival, directing the first annual Christmas show, “A Side Show Christmas: Secret Santa.”

In the spring of 2012, President Ian Marshall registered Side Show as an official student organization in Indiana State University Student Activities and Organizations through the Indiana State University Student Government Association (SGA), started an account with the University to financially support the group, and gained recognition for the group within the University. Because of the SAO support, Side Show saw more interested students at auditions the following spring. The first show Marshall directed that spring was the first annual Broadway Revue. The show had record breaking attendance and was a major success with the audience and faculty. Because of the show, Side Show was pulled out of its rut and was now a quality organization.

Side Show branched off of the Department of Theater and became an independent organization in the winter of 2012. By becoming an independent organization, like many others, Side Show is free to perform in different venues outside of the Theatre Department, such as Indianapolis Artsgarden.

Rachael Rosfeld and Kyle Guyton are the current president and vice president of Side Show.

In the fall of 2014, with the support of the Theatre Department, Side Show was able to produce The Color Purple. The production involved many majors and non-majors and was very well praised within the community of Terre Haute. The show broke many records for the department including selling out every show before the show opened.
